Summer 2027 โ€” Where Else?

Six new-country ideas for the same two-week window
Jul 12 โ€“ Jul 25, 2027 ยท 13 nights ยท zero school days
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ SHORTLIST ยท v1 ยท Aug 2026
← All Olson Travels

Same window as Japan and France โ€” out the day after BreyerFest, home four clear days before All City, no school missed. Every one of these is a country the family hasn't been to. They're ordered roughly by how well they fit this particular six-person crew.

๐Ÿงญ What each one has to solve: something real for Evelyn and horses ยท something for Reid beyond a museum ยท a theme-park-grade day for David and Charlie ยท a way to sleep six without splitting up ยท and mid-July weather that doesn't wreck a walking trip.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 1 ยท Ireland already half-drafted

Dublin ยท Kildare ยท Galway ยท Cliffs of Moher ยท Dingle ยท Killarney
EvelynThe Irish National Stud, Kildare โ€” 45 minutes from Dublin, and a genuinely serious horse day. Guided tours at 10:30, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 including the foaling unit, plus the Irish Racehorse Experience (kids 7+ with an adult) and the Japanese Gardens. Ireland is a thoroughbred country the way Kentucky is.
ReidNewgrange โ€” older than Stonehenge and the pyramids. Dรบn Aonghasa clifftop fort on Inis Mรณr. Bunratty Castle.
D & CNo theme park, honestly. But: Aran Islands by bike, sheepdog demonstrations, and cliff walks that beat a coaster.
68ยฐF day / 54ยฐF nightโ˜” ~15 rainy days in July~$16โ€“20kno jet-lag wall

The honest catch: July averages about 3 inches of rain across roughly 15 days. It's soft, mild rain rather than storms, but this is not a sunshine trip. Everything else about it fits: English-speaking, easy driving once you adjust to the left, cottages that sleep six everywhere, and a horse day that genuinely rivals Saumur.

๐Ÿ“ There's already an Ireland itinerary on the site from the spring-break shortlist โ€” Dublin, Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Dingle, Killarney. It ports straight to July, and July is a much better month for it than March.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ 2 ยท Belgium + Netherlands

Bruges ยท Ghent ยท Waterloo ยท Amsterdam ยท Efteling
D & CEfteling โ€” the Netherlands' largest park and the second most-visited theme park in all of Europe, behind only Disneyland Paris. It's a fairytale park: the Fairytale Forest, a steam train, river rapids, and a few genuine coasters. Older and stranger than Disney, and beloved for it.
ReidThe Waterloo 1815 Memorial โ€” the actual battlefield, with the Lion's Mound, the 360ยฐ Panorama painting, and Hougoumont farm. Napoleon's last day, standing where it happened.
EvelynWeakest link of the six. Belgian and Dutch draft horses, carriage rides in Bruges, and beach riding on the North Sea coast โ€” pleasant, but no Saumur or National Stud equivalent.
~72โ€“77ยฐF๐Ÿš† trains, barely need a car~$15โ€“19kvery compact

Why it works: two countries, tiny distances, superb trains, and everyone speaks English. Ghent is the smart base โ€” bigger and more livable than Bruges, with the moated Castle of the Counts, and day-trippable to Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp. Bruges is best stayed in overnight, when the day-trippers leave.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น 3 ยท Germany + Austria

Europa-Park ยท Bavaria ยท Neuschwanstein ยท Salzburg
D & CEuropa-Park โ€” winner of the Golden Ticket Award for Best Theme Park in the World, and rated Germany's best in the 2026 Freizeitpark Checks at 22.51 out of 25. Over 100 attractions across themed European countries. It is, by most measures, better than any Disney park in Europe.
EveryoneNeuschwanstein โ€” the castle Disney copied. Plus Salzburg, the Sound of Music country, and the Bavarian Alps for the cool-down.
EvelynBavarian and Haflinger horses, alpine trail riding in Tyrol, and the Spanish Riding School's Lipizzaner foals and mares in Vienna โ€” not the stallions, who summer at Piber through July.
~75โ€“80ยฐF, Alps 57โ€“68ยฐF~$16โ€“21k๐ŸŽข best park in the world

The pitch: if the theme-park day is what David and Charlie care most about, this is the strongest option on the list โ€” better than Disneyland Paris and better than Tokyo โ€” with alpine scenery and a castle that needs no explanation.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ 4 ยท Denmark + a slice of Sweden

Copenhagen ยท Tivoli ยท Billund ยท LEGOLAND
D & CLEGOLAND Billund โ€” the original, in LEGO's home town, with LEGO House next door. In July it runs extended hours, 10am to 8pm, and there's a standing summer offer: visit Jul 1โ€“Aug 31 and day two costs 99 DKK (about $15).
EveryoneTivoli Gardens in Copenhagen โ€” one of the oldest amusement parks on earth, right in the middle of the city, at its best May through August.
ReidViking ship museums, Kronborg (Hamlet's Elsinore), and some of the best cycling infrastructure anywhere.
59โ€“72ยฐF๐Ÿšธ kids under 12 free on trains~$17โ€“22kโ˜” rain any day

The honest catch: July and early August are LEGOLAND's busiest weeks by a distance โ€” one guide describes the park as "a Lego traffic jam." Go at opening, use the long evenings, and take the cheap second day. Denmark is also expensive, though kids ride trains free nationwide, which softens it.

๐Ÿด 5 ยท Scotland

Edinburgh ยท Highlands ยท Skye ยท Highland Games
EveryoneHighland Games โ€” the season peaks in July and August with events almost every weekend: caber toss, heavy athletics, piping, dancing. Inverness on Jul 11, St Andrews on Jul 19, Gairloch in early July. Turn up and you're at a real community event, not a show.
EvelynHighland ponies, trekking centres across the Highlands, and beach riding on Skye and in Galloway.
ReidEdinburgh Castle, Stirling, Culloden battlefield, and the Jacobite steam train over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
stays below ~68ยฐFโ˜€๏ธ daylight to 10pm~$15โ€“19kno jet-lag wall

The pitch: the coolest weather on this list, and the one where the "big daily event" is free and local rather than ticketed. No theme park, and midges in the west Highlands are a genuine nuisance in July โ€” bring repellent and head nets, unironically.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ 6 ยท South Africa the big swing

Safari ยท Cape Town ยท Garden Route
EveryoneJuly is the single best month of the year for game viewing. It's peak dry season: sparse vegetation, and predators and prey concentrating around the last permanent water. This is not a compromise month โ€” it's the month.
FamilyMalaria-free Big Five reserves exist and are excellent for kids โ€” Madikwe (easy from Johannesburg, family rooms, children's programmes), plus Pilanesberg, the Waterberg and the Eastern Cape. No prophylaxis argument with four kids.
EvelynHorseback safari โ€” riding among giraffe and zebra is offered at several reserves. Nothing else on this list competes with that.
up to 86ยฐF day / 45ยฐF night๐Ÿฆ peak game viewing~$22โ€“32kโœˆ๏ธ ~20h travel

The honest catch: it's the most expensive and the longest flight by a wide margin, and July is winter โ€” Cape Town is its wet, cool season, so a Cape leg is a gamble. Game drives leave before dawn in near-freezing air. But it is also the only option here that the kids would talk about for the rest of their lives.

๐Ÿ˜ South Africa is already sitting on the "considering" list. July is the right month for it โ€” that's worth knowing even if this isn't the year.

Round two — five more, added after the first pass

The first six were the obvious European candidates. These five came out of pushing harder on the one question the others kept answering badly: where can Evelyn actually be around horses that matter? One of them reorders the whole list.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ท 7 · Slovenia + Croatia new #1 for horses

Lipica · Lake Bled · Postojna · Plitvice · Istria coast
EvelynLIPICA STUD FARM — founded 1580, and this is not a place that has Lipizzaners, it is the place the entire breed is named after and descended from. Vienna's Spanish Riding School sources its horses from here. The classical riding school performs Tuesday, Friday and Sunday through the summer, about 50 minutes, suitable for all ages, plus stable and pasture tours.
ReidPostojna Cave — 24km of cave system you enter on an electric train — and Predjama Castle, built into the mouth of a cliff cave. Plitvice's boardwalks over 16 waterfall-linked lakes.
D & CNo theme park. But swimming off Istria, a cave train, and a castle in a cliff cover it.
Alps 75°F / coast 85–90°F~$14–20kcheapest of the horse options
๐ŸŽ This solves the exact problem that killed Vienna. The Lipizzaners are away from the Spanish Riding School during July. At Lipica in July they are home and performing three days a week. If Evelyn is the tiebreaker, this is the answer — and it isn't close.

The honest catch: the flying is the weak point — no easy MSN connection, so expect two stops into Ljubljana or Zagreb, or fly into Venice and drive two hours. Plitvice gets genuinely crowded in July; book timed entry and go at opening. Coastal Croatia runs 85–90°F.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น 8 · Portugal best value in Western Europe

Lisbon · Sintra · Óbidos · Algarve
EvelynThe Portuguese School of Equestrian Art — one of only four classical academies in the world, alongside Vienna, Saumur and Jerez. Lusitano stallions, 18th-century costume. Morning training is open to the public most days, with weekly ~45-minute performances and a monthly evening gala including the airs above the ground.
ReidSintra's Moorish castle walls along a forest ridge, and Óbidos — a complete walled town whose ramparts you can walk all the way around.
D & COceanário de Lisboa, one of the best aquariums anywhere. Benagil sea caves by boat. Quinta da Regaleira's initiation well — a spiral staircase descending into the earth, and the single most kid-pleasing site in Portugal.
Lisbon low 80s · inland 90s+~$12–17kcheapest Western Europe

The honest catch: July heat inland and on the Algarve is real — 90°F+ is normal and the interior can pass 100°F. Lisbon and the Atlantic coast stay tempered in the low 80s. Also, Lisbon's hills are brutal at the end of a long day. Note the Golégã horse fair is in November, not summer — don't plan around it.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช 9 · Peru zero jet lag

Lima · Sacred Valley · Machu Picchu · Cusco
The trickPeru is UTC-5 — exactly Central Daylight Time. You fly overnight and wake up on your own clock. No jet lag out, none back. Against Japan, where you lose two days on each end, that is worth more over a two-week trip than it sounds.
EvelynThe Peruvian Paso is the national horse and one of the world's great gaited breeds — a lateral four-beat gait so smooth it's demonstrated by riders holding a full glass. Haciendas near Lima and in the Sacred Valley offer riding and demonstrations.
ReidMachu Picchu, Ollantaytambo's terraced fortress, and Moray's concentric agricultural terraces. July is Peru's dry season — the clearest skies of the year over the Andes.
D & CThe Maras salt pans — thousands of white evaporation ponds down a hillside — and alpacas absolutely everywhere.
Cusco 68°F day / 32°F night~$13–19kdry season
โš ๏ธ Altitude is the real constraint, and it needs a pediatrician conversation. Cusco sits at about 11,150 ft. The standard fix is to sleep in the Sacred Valley first at roughly 9,200 ft, which measurably reduces altitude sickness in children, and save Cusco for the end. Most kids adjust in 24–48 hours. Diamox is not established as safe or effective under 12.

Also: Machu Picchu entry slots, the good trains and the best Sacred Valley lodging sell out 6–9 months ahead for July. This is the one option on the list you cannot book late.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด 10 · Norway most beautiful, most expensive

Bergen · Flåm · Nærøyfjord · Lofoten
The drawThe Flåm Railway, 20km from fjord level to mountain and routinely called the most scenic train ride on earth, paired with a cruise through Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO site and one of the narrowest fjords anywhere.
ReidMidnight sun. Above the Arctic Circle in July the sun does not set — you can hike Lofoten at 1am in daylight. Plus Viking history and Bergen's Bryggen wharf.
EvelynModest but real — the Norwegian Fjord horse is one of the oldest breeds in the world, dun with an upright two-tone mane, and farm riding is offered throughout the fjord region.
60–65°Fโ˜” Bergen rains 2 days in 3~$20–28k

The honest catch — cost. Norway is one of the most expensive countries on earth; a casual dinner for six runs $200–250. Budget roughly 40–50% above Ireland for the same trip, and treat self-catering as the strategy rather than a fallback. Lofoten plus the fjords in two weeks also needs an internal flight.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ 11 · Switzerland the no-car trip

Lucerne · Interlaken · Jungfrau · Zermatt
The drawThe best public transport system in the world. Trains, cogwheel railways, gondolas and lake steamers on one integrated ticket, on time to the minute. You never rent a car, never park, never navigate — which for six people removes the most stressful part of European travel.
D & CGrindelwald's First Cliff Walk, mountain carts and summer toboggan runs are built for exactly this age range. Jungfraujoch tunnels through the Eiger to 11,300 ft, with snow in July.
EvelynNothing. This is the honest weak spot — no equestrian draw comparable to Lipica, Portugal or Saumur.
mid-70s in the valleys~$20–27kno car needed

The honest catch: the most expensive country in Europe, and mountain excursions are priced per person on top of the rail pass — Jungfraujoch alone runs well over $500 for six. It's also the least “new”-feeling option: culturally a blend of Germany, France and Italy rather than its own thing.

๐Ÿ” What round two changes:

Slovenia moves to the top of the horse list. Lipica in July beats Saumur, the Irish National Stud and everything else on this page, because it's the origin farm of the breed and it performs three days a week all summer. It's also cheaper than France or Ireland.
Portugal is the value play — a top-four classical riding academy plus the best kid-site in Iberia, at the lowest cost of any Western European option.
Peru is the wildcard, and the zero-jet-lag point is genuinely underrated. The altitude is a real medical constraint, not a footnote.
Norway and Switzerland are the beautiful, expensive ones — and neither does anything for Evelyn.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช Belgium moved. It came 5th here as a summer option and was the weakest for Evelyn. But in late October it's a different trip entirely — the Oostduinkerke horseback shrimp fishermen ride in autumn, not summer, and MCPASD's Fall Break makes it a 9-day trip for 4 school days. It's now its own planner: Belgium — Fall Break 2027.

All thirteen candidates for Jul 12โ€“25, 2027, side by side. France and Japan carried over from the earlier planners so you're comparing everything at once.

๐Ÿ† If you want one sentence per option:

France is still the best all-round fit โ€” it's the only one that scores top marks for Evelyn and has a real theme park and comes in cheapest.
Ireland is the closest rival and arguably the better country โ€” mild, English-speaking, cottages everywhere, and a horse day equal to Saumur's. You just have to accept the rain.
Germany + Austria wins outright if the theme-park day is the priority; Europa-Park beats every Disney park in Europe.
Scotland is the coolest, cheapest, easiest, and the least "scheduled" โ€” best if you want a trip that isn't a checklist.
Belgium + Netherlands is the easiest logistically of any option here, and the weakest for Evelyn.
Denmark is a great 8-day trip stretched thin over 13.
South Africa is the one they’d remember forever, and costs roughly double.
Slovenia + Croatia is the best horse trip on the page and cheaper than France.
Portugal is the value pick.
Peru is the only one with no jet lag, and the only one with an altitude problem.
Norway and Switzerland are the most beautiful and the most expensive, and do nothing for Evelyn.

๐ŸŽ Reading this as a horse family: the real shortlist is Slovenia, France, Ireland, Portugal, and South Africa โ€” and Lipica is the strongest single horse day of the lot. Those three are the only ones where Evelyn gets something she couldn't get at home. Everything else gives her a nice afternoon.
๐Ÿ’ก A combination worth considering: Ireland and Scotland are a single easy trip โ€” Dublin in, ferry or a short hop to Scotland, Edinburgh out. Two new countries, one flight pair, no jet lag, and both peak in July. That's probably the highest value-per-dollar option on this whole page.

For completeness โ€” what's not on the list, and why.

Already been

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ Iceland โ€” summer 2023. Reykjavik, Golden Circle, South Coast, Jรถkulsรกrlรณn, Snรฆfellsnes
  • ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ Bahamas โ€” spring break 2023

Already on the board elsewhere

  • ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ท Costa Rica โ€” was a spring-break-2027 candidate. July is green season: afternoon rain daily. Decemberโ€“April is the right window
  • ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ท Croatia โ€” on the considering list. Mid-July on the Dalmatian coast runs high-80s to 90s and is peak-crowded; June or September is better
  • ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ New Zealand โ€” July is deep winter there. It's a ski trip, not a summer trip. Decemberโ€“February is the match
  • ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japan โ€” Jul 12โ€“25 works and catches Gion Matsuri, but it's genuinely better in cherry blossom season, which is what spring break 2028 is for

Wrong month

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italy, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท Greece, southern ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain โ€” mid-July is 95โ€“105ยฐF and peak-crowded. Andalusia's Royal Andalusian School in Jerez would be a fantastic horse day in April, not July
  • ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น Vienna specifically โ€” the Lipizzaner stallions summer at Piber through July and early August. The famous performance isn't running
