Why this moved to 2028

The October 2027 version of this trip is dead — it collides with a work go-live. So this is the same trip, rebuilt one year later, and the 2028 window is arguably better: fewer school days, and Halloween itself lands mid-trip.

⚠️ Read this first — the 2028–29 school calendar is not published yet. MCPASD's Board approved calendars through 2027–28 only (December 2025 meeting). Everything below about October 2028 school days is a projection from two consecutive published years, not a verified fact. The district usually publishes about two years ahead, so the real 2028–29 calendar should land sometime in the 2026–27 school year. Re-check before booking anything non-refundable.

Both published years put Fall Break on the weekdays wrapped around Oct 29–Nov 1 and resume school on Nov 2. In 2028 Oct 29 falls on a Sunday, which pushes the break onto Monday the 30th and Tuesday the 31st.

The shape: Fly out Saturday Oct 28, land Sunday morning. Seven nights on the ground — four in Bruges, three in Brussels. Fly home Sunday Nov 5. Under the projection that costs two or three school days, against four for the 2027 version.

🎃 Halloween lands mid-trip

Oct 31, 2028 is a Tuesday, right in the middle. Belgium's Halloween park season is at full tilt — and it's genuinely good, not an afterthought.

🐴 Still the right month

The Oostduinkerke horseback fishing season runs mid-September to mid-December. Late October into early November is the heart of it.

🍂 Still shoulder season

After the summer peak, before the mid-November Christmas-market surge. Flights and lodging at their annual low.

🚆 Still a tiny country

Brussels to Bruges is an hour. You unpack twice across nine days.

The Halloween tradeoff, flipped

The 2027 plan flew home on Oct 31 so the kids could trick-or-treat. The 2028 plan can't do that — Halloween is a Tuesday in the middle of Fall Break, and it's the reason the school-day math works at all. So you're trading American trick-or-treating for the Belgian version:

  • Walibi Belgium runs Europe's biggest Halloween event — four haunted houses, four scare zones, late openings to 10pm. Its season historically runs from around Oct 10 into the second week of November. Genuinely frightening, and better suited to your 15-year-olds than to the youngest.
  • Pairi Daiza runs a family-scale Halloween across the same window — decorated grounds, evening openings, shows. No horror.
  • Bellewaerde, right next to Ypres, does a Halloween season too, which makes the Flanders Fields day easier to balance.
Be honest with the kids about this one up front. Missing trick-or-treating with their friends is a real cost to a 12-year-old, and finding out about it in October is worse than agreeing to it in advance.

What each kid gets

EvelynThe horseback shrimp fishermen of Oostduinkerke — UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the only place on earth where people still fish from the back of a Brabant draft horse, wading chest-deep into the North Sea dragging nets. The fishers themselves say October is the best month.
ReidFlanders Fields. Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, and the Last Post at the Menin Gate — buglers, every night at 8pm since 1928, in all weather, free.
CharlieBrussels is a comic-book city. The Comic Strip Trail is 60+ building-sized murals of Tintin, the Smurfs and Lucky Luke across the old town. Plus Halloween season at two of Europe's best parks.
DavidPairi Daiza — repeatedly voted the best zoo in Europe, with giant pandas and a walk-through aviary. Also dinosaurs at the Natural Sciences museum and the Atomium.
Straight answer on Pokémon: Belgium doesn't have it. No Pokémon Café, no Pokémon Center. Belgium's kid-currency is comics — Tintin and the Smurfs are Belgian, and the country treats them the way Japan treats Pokémon. If the Pokémon hook is non-negotiable, that's an argument for Japan, not Belgium.

Weather

Cool, grey and damp. Bruges averages a high near 57°F and a low near 48°F in late October; Brussels is a touch cooler at night. Expect rain on roughly half the days — drizzle rather than downpour. European clocks fall back on the last Sunday of October, so from Oct 29, 2028 onward sunset is around 5:15pm. Plan outdoor things for mornings. Pack hooded waterproof shells for six; umbrellas lose to coastal wind.

The honest tradeoffs

  • The school dates are projected, not verified. This is the big one. Don't book non-refundable until the 2028–29 calendar publishes.
  • No trick-or-treating at home. Covered above — agree it in advance.
  • Short days and grey skies. This is not a sun trip. If the family's mental image of Europe is café terraces, October Belgium will disappoint. If it's castles in fog, it delivers.
  • Check the go-live calendar again. If the October go-live is an annual cycle rather than a one-off, October 2028 has the same problem October 2027 does, and this whole plan should move to Spring Break instead.

Nine days, two bases

Bruges for the first four nights covers the whole west — Ypres and the coast are both under an hour. Brussels for the last three puts you next to the airport with the big kid days at the end, once everyone's over the jet lag.

  • MSN → Brussels, one stop. Delta via ATL or JFK, United via ORD or EWR, KLM/Delta via AMS. Overnight eastbound, roughly 11–13 hours door to door.
  • Book six seats together early — two rows of three gets hard past about four months out.
  • Eat on the plane, sleep on the plane. The first day is won or lost here.
2Sun Oct 29Land → Bruges. Do almost nothing.
  • Land Brussels mid-morning. Train to Bruges is about 1h15 with a change, or a pre-booked van transfer if the luggage math is ugly.
  • Walk the Markt. Canal boat if they are still running — a 30-minute sit-down orientation to the city.
  • Frites from a frietkot with mayonnaise, which is the correct way and not negotiable locally.
  • Clocks fall back today. It will be dark by about 5:15pm, which actually helps everyone crash early.
3Mon Oct 30Bruges proper
  • Belfry climb — 366 steps, narrow, and the thing the kids will brag about. Go at opening; it caps how many people are inside.
  • Historium on the Markt — a walk-through recreation of medieval Bruges. Hits the 11–15 range well.
  • Choco-Story and a hands-on chocolate workshop if you want one purely-fun booking.
  • Bikes in the afternoon along the canal ring. Bruges is flat and the outer ring is nearly car-free.
4Tue Oct 31Halloween on the coast Evelyn's day
  • Drive to Oostduinkerke, 45 minutes up the coast. The paardenvissers ride Brabant draft horses chest-deep into the surf dragging shrimp nets — UNESCO-listed in 2013, and the only surviving example in the world.
  • Critical: they ride on published dates, not daily. The October 2026 calendar ran Oct 4, Oct 17 and Oct 31 — so Halloween itself has form. The 2028 dates get posted by the NAVIGO museum; check them the moment they appear and build this whole trip around that date if it moves.
  • NAVIGO fisheries museum in the village covers the tradition, the horses and the boats, and has a working smokehouse.
  • Shrimp croquettes for lunch — the local dish, and the direct output of what you just watched.
  • Back to Bruges for Halloween evening. Belgium does not trick-or-treat the way the US does, but the bars, shops and squares decorate heavily and there is plenty of atmosphere.
5Wed Nov 1Ypres & Flanders Fields rent the car for today
  • About an hour southwest. This is the day the car earns its keep — the sites are spread across farmland.
  • In Flanders Fields Museum in the Cloth Hall. Every visitor gets a poppy bracelet coded to a real person and the exhibits follow that individual through the war. Extraordinarily well done for this age range.
  • Tyne Cot Cemetery — 11,900 graves, the largest Commonwealth cemetery anywhere. Quiet, and it does the explaining for you.
  • Nov 1 is All Saints’ Day, a public holiday in Belgium, and the war cemeteries are especially tended. Expect some museums to run holiday hours — confirm before driving out.
  • Dinner on Ypres’ main square, then the Last Post at the Menin Gate at 8:00pm sharp. Buglers of the local fire brigade, every night since 1928, free, no booking. Arrive by 7:30.
  • Drive back to Bruges after. The kids will sleep.
6Thu Nov 2Ghent, then on to Brussels
  • Check out of Bruges. Ghent is 25 minutes by train and directly en route.
  • Gravensteen — a genuine moated stone castle in the middle of a city, with an audio guide narrated as deadpan comedy that is famous for making teenagers actually listen. There is a torture-instrument room, which the boys will consider the highlight.
  • St Bavo’s Cathedral for the Ghent Altarpiece — the most-stolen artwork in history, with an AR guide covering the heists.
  • Late-afternoon train to Brussels, about 35 minutes. Check in, eat mussels — moules-frites season runs roughly September to February, so this is the right month.
7Fri Nov 3Pairi Daiza
  • About an hour from Brussels to Brugelette. Give it the whole day; the park is enormous and repeatedly voted Europe’s best zoo.
  • Giant pandas, an indoor Indonesian rainforest, a walk-through aviary and a genuinely good aquarium.
  • Check the Halloween end date. In 2026 Pairi Daiza’s Halloween season closed around Nov 2, so by Nov 3 you may be seeing the regular park — which is still worth the day. If Halloween decoration matters, swap this to Nov 1 and move Ypres.
  • Alternative for the older two: Walibi’s Halloween runs later into November. Splitting the family for a day is a legitimate move here — the haunted houses are genuinely too much for the youngest.
8Sat Nov 4Brussels
  • Grand Place at opening, before the crowds. A single enclosed square of gilded guildhalls, and there is nothing else quite like it.
  • Comic Strip Trail — a self-guided walk past building-sized murals of Tintin, the Smurfs and Lucky Luke. Free, outdoors, and it turns walking between things into the activity. Pair with the Belgian Comic Strip Centre if it rains.
  • Atomium + Mini-Europe on a combo ticket — nine steel spheres you ride escalators between, and 350 scale-model European landmarks next door.
  • Weather collapse plan: the Museum of Natural Sciences has one of Europe’s great dinosaur halls, including a herd of thirty Iguanodons found in a Belgian coal mine.
  • Liège waffles from a street cart, not the plate-sized Brussels kind.
9Sun Nov 5Fly home
  • Brussels Airport is 20 minutes from the center and has a train station directly underneath.
  • Morning departure; the time change works for you westbound and you land Madison mid-afternoon.
  • School Monday. There is no recovery day in this version — that is the cost of the later window.
If the projection is wrong and Fall Break lands elsewhere in 2028, the fix is easy: this itinerary is a fixed nine-day block that works any week from mid-October to mid-November. Slide it. The only thing that genuinely anchors it is the Oostduinkerke fishing date.

The four cities

Bruges base 1 · 4 nights

A medieval trading city that got economically stranded in the 1500s and so never got rebuilt. Canals, cobbles, a 366-step belfry. In late autumn you get it at maybe a third of summer density.

Do: Belfry, Historium, canal boat, Choco-Story, bike the ring.

Ghent day, en route

The city Bruges’ crowds skip. Bigger, younger, a real university town — and it has the castle. Best single-day stop in Belgium.

Do: Gravensteen, the Ghent Altarpiece, the Graslei waterfront.

Brussels base 2 · 3 nights

Less pretty than Bruges, more to actually do. Grand Place, comics, the Atomium, and the best rainy-day museum bench in the country.

Do: Grand Place, Comic Strip Trail, Atomium + Mini-Europe, Natural Sciences.

Ypres day trip · 1h

Rebuilt brick-for-brick after being flattened in WWI. The Cloth Hall museum and the Menin Gate ceremony are the emotional center of the trip.

Do: In Flanders Fields, Tyne Cot, Last Post at 8pm.

Getting around

Recommended: trains for the cities, a rental car for one or two days. Brussels–Bruges–Ghent are frequent, fast, cheap trains, and parking in Bruges is a nightmare. But Ypres and Oostduinkerke are rural and spread out. Pick the car up in Bruges the morning you need it and drop it that evening.
  • Trains: Brussels–Bruges runs about €17 one way, roughly hourly, walk-up. No advance booking needed.
  • Kids under 12 ride free on Belgian rail with a paying adult, up to four children per adult, with ID proving age. By late 2028 this likely covers none of your four — the youngest will probably have aged out. Budget six fares.
  • Car: book an automatic explicitly and in writing. Manual is the European default and “or similar” on a booking will hand you a stick shift. A six-seater automatic needs reserving months ahead, not at the counter.
  • Brussels Airport has a train station directly underneath — 20 minutes to the center, no transfer.

What to eat

  • Moules-frites — mussel season runs roughly September through February. Right month.
  • Frites from a standalone frietkot, twice-fried, in a paper cone, with mayonnaise or andalouse.
  • Shrimp croquettes — the coast’s dish, and the output of the horseback fishery.
  • Waffles — Liège (dense, caramelized, street food) beats Brussels (light, plate-sized, dessert).
  • Beer — the deepest brewing tradition in the world; every café carries fifty. De Halve Maan in Bruges does a brewery tour.

Where to sleep six people

Same playbook that worked in Utah and the Grand Canyon: apartments over hotel rooms. Two hotel rooms for six costs more than one three-bedroom apartment and gives you no kitchen, no living room and no laundry.

Bruges — 4 nights (Oct 29 – Nov 1)

Apartment inside the ring

Bruges’ historic core is enclosed by a canal ring about a mile across — anywhere inside it walks to everything. Three-bedroom apartments run $200–340/night in late autumn, well below the summer rate.

Target: between the Markt and the Minnewater, or the quieter Sint-Anna quarter to the east.

Hotel Dukes’ Palace

A 15th-century ducal palace turned hotel, inside the ring, with family rooms. $230–350/night per room — you would need two.

Marriott option

There is Bonvoy inventory in Bruges and Ghent. With Chad’s Titanium Elite that means free breakfast for six, worth roughly $90/day in Belgium. Price it against the apartment.

Brussels — 3 nights (Nov 2–4)

Apartment near Sainte-Catherine

Walks to the Grand Place, on the metro, and a real neighborhood with restaurants rather than a tourist strip. Three-bedroom units $180–300/night.

European Quarter hotels

Business district — it empties on weekends and prices drop Friday to Sunday. Your Brussels nights are Thu/Fri/Sat, so this is the arbitrage. Family rooms $170–280.

Avoid

Anything immediately around Brussels-Midi station at night, and the Grand Place blocks themselves, which are loud and priced for people who don’t know better.

Book order: flights first (autumn fares move most), then Bruges, then Brussels. Bruges has genuinely limited inventory inside the ring and good three-bedroom apartments go 4–6 months out even in shoulder season. Brussels you could book six weeks out and be fine. But hold off on anything non-refundable until the 2028–29 school calendar publishes.

Realistic target: $10,000–$11,500 if you book flights by spring 2028.

This is the cheap transatlantic. Shoulder-season Belgium undercuts Japan, Scandinavia and Switzerland by a wide margin, and under the projection the school-day cost is lower than the 2027 version was.

Where the money actually moves

  • Flights are 45% of the trip. Everything else is noise. Set fare alerts on MSN→BRU and also price MSN→AMS — Amsterdam often runs cheaper and is a 2-hour direct train to Brussels, 3h to Bruges.
  • Late October into early November is a genuine low-season window for northern Europe — after the summer peak, before the Christmas-market surge that starts mid-November.
  • Pairi Daiza is the one big ticket, around €40–45 a head, so roughly $290–320 for six. Buy online; gate prices are higher.
  • Menin Gate, the Comic Strip Trail and the Grand Place are free. Three of the trip’s best hours cost nothing.
  • Trains cost slightly more than the 2027 version because the youngest will likely have aged out of the free-under-12 fare.

Before anything else

Blocking — do these first

  • WAIT for the MCPASD 2028–29 calendar to publish, then verify Fall Break
  • Confirm the October go-live is a one-off and not an annual cycle — if annual, move this to Spring Break
  • Agree with the kids in advance that they are missing trick-or-treating
  • Confirm no lacrosse / hockey / baseball conflicts Oct 28 – Nov 5, 2028

Passports — start now

  • Check all six expiry dates. Belgium is Schengen: valid 3+ months beyond departure
  • Any passport expiring before Feb 2029 needs renewing — kid passports are only valid 5 years
  • Check ETIAS — the EU travel authorization is expected to be required for Americans well before 2028. Roughly €7, valid 3 years, online

The one date that could move the trip

  • Watch the NAVIGO museum calendar for 2028 horseback shrimp-fishing dates
  • They ride on set dates, not daily — October 2026 had only three
  • Oct 31 was a fishing date in 2026, so Halloween has form
  • If the 2028 date falls outside Oct 28 – Nov 5, decide whether to slide the whole trip
